Splitwise keeps balances in each currency separate by default — for example, "You owe $12.45 and you are owed £8.72." New expenses default to the last currency used in that group or friendship, but you can change the currency of an expense at any time.

- When adding or editing an expense or payment, tap the currency symbol next to the amount.
- Select your desired currency from the list.
Please note that this only changes the currency label on the expense, it does not convert the amount.
To convert all expenses to a single currency (Splitwise Pro):
If you want to settle up in a single currency, Splitwise Pro (our premium subscription) offers a currency conversion feature that converts all expenses in a group or friendship to your default currency at the current market exchange rate.
To use the currency conversion feature:
- Open the group or friendship you want to convert.
- Look for the "Convert to [your default currency]" button. This button only appears when you have expenses or balances in a currency other than your default currency (to check or update your default currency, go to your Account Settings).
- Tap the Convert button to convert all past expenses to your default currency.
Note: if you add new expenses in a different currency after converting, those won't be converted automatically. You'll need to tap the "Convert" button again, and then those items will be converted at the current exchange rate.
Before you convert: The conversion applies to all expenses in the group or friendship, including ones that are already settled. This can affect balances for other people who share those expenses. We recommend only using this feature when your group is ready to settle up, and making sure your default currency is set correctly first.
If you accidentally converted your expenses
Email us at support@splitwise.com as soon as possible. We may be able to revert the conversion for you, but this isn't always possible — especially if multiple conversions have been made.
