This can happen if someone was added with their email address and phone number separately, two different email addresses, or a deactivated and an active Splitwise account.
When someone is added to a group twice, we recommend they merge their accounts into one. This will prevent confusion in the future and allow them to access all their data from one account.
To merge the accounts, the two accounts cannot be included together on any of the same expenses. To remove one account from a shared expense:
- Tap the expense.
- Tap the pencil icon in the top right corner to edit it.
- Tap the split type (e.g. "equally") in the "Paid by X and split equally" line.
- Tap the name of the duplicate account to uncheck it. Repeat for all expenses that include both accounts.
- Once there are no more shared expenses, they can merge their accounts by visiting this page.
Note: If one of the profiles is due to an unclaimed invite to only their phone number, they can complete the merge by instead logging into the account under their email and adding their number from Account Settings. (Tap "Account" → "Edit" next to the email address → add the number → "Save changes").
If one of the accounts has been deactivated, contact support@splitwise.com so we can help complete the merge.
If one of the accounts has been deactivated, contact support@splitwise.com so we can help complete the merge.
If the person prefers to keep both accounts separate, you can remove the duplicate account from the group:
- Navigate to the group.
- Tap the gear icon in the top right corner.
- Tap the name of the account you'd like to remove.
- Select the option to remove them from the group. If the duplicate account has a balance, you will need to remove it from any shared expenses first using the steps above.
